흰개미집은 온도조절을 위해 높은 타워 형태의 집을 만들고 여러 개의 작은 구멍을 내어 공기를 순환시켜 온도를 유지한다. 그리고 버섯을 키워 나무를 분해해 식량을 해결한다. 분해하는 과정에서 분해 열이 발생하고 그 열로 겨울을 보낼 수 있다.
